About:

The horses and riders come from all walks of life and are from all parts of the UK. They have travelled miles to be here from as far north as Scotland to Dorset down south. They have been up since the crack of dawn transforming themselves and their horses into the amazing sight that is the ‘All The Queens Horses’ section of the Parade.

The horses became part of the London New Year’s Day Parade in 2012 an idea created by Caroline Marsh and were invited back again the following year and are now a firm favourite with the crowd.

From Shires to Shetlands, Iberians, Connemaras, Friesians, warmbloods, Arabs, Welsh Ponies and thoroughbreds and quarter horses, so many breeds all in one place.

The horses are definitely one of the most interactive parts of the Parade, and it doesn’t matter how old you are, you are a child again when you are able to touch a horse.

Banda Comunal La Fortuna was founded in 2010 by former director Erick Quesada Angulo with support of ADIFORT, the local government, with the main goal of opening a space for music, culture, art and growth in the little community at the base of the Arenal Volcano.

The format accommodates children as young as 8 years old to adults up to 50 years old, uniting them as a single group representing Costa Rica both domestically and internationally. They have participated in events in countries such as Panama, Guatemala, Colombia, and the United States.

The Director is a graduate in Music Education, he is the founder and current director of Banda Comunal La Fortuna, with over 17 years of experience in leading school and community bands. He established Academia de Artes La Fortuna, a music academy that teaches children and adults to play various instruments. Certified as a WAMSB International Judge, he has taken part in several Marching Band Symposia in Costa Rica and Mexico and played a crucial role in the auditions for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps in Costa Rica.

The band is led by Erick Quesada Angulo, a passionate Music Education graduate and the founder and current director of Banda Comunal La Fortuna. With over 17 years of experience in leading school and community bands, Quesada Angulo has been instrumental in shaping the band’s success. He also established the Academia de Artes La Fortuna, a thriving music academy that teaches children and adults to play various instruments.

International Recognition and Expertise

Certified as a WAMSB International Judge, Erick Quesada Angulo brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the band. He has participated in several Marching Band Symposia in Costa Rica and Mexico and played a crucial role in the auditions for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps in Costa Rica. His leadership and dedication ensure that Banda Comunal La Fortuna continues to excel and inspire.

Located in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, the BASIS Phoenix Band Programme comprises over 160 dedicated students from Year 6 to Year 12. These students begin their musical journey in Year 6, honing their skills and advancing to join either the Concert Band or the Symphonic Band by Year 8. This year, a select group from both bands will have the prestigious opportunity to perform at the London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival Performance.

The Firebird Band proudly includes both middle and high school students who regularly earn Arizona All-State and Arizona All-Region honours, showcasing the high calibre of the musicians.

Meet the Band Director

Jared Bushee is in his 10th year as the Band Director at BASIS Phoenix, overseeing all bands from Year 6 through to the Symphonic Band. Before joining BASIS Phoenix, Bushee enjoyed a successful career as a professional orchestral trumpet player, performing with esteemed ensembles such as the San Diego Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Oregon Symphony, and Syracuse Symphony.

This upcoming London performance marks Bushee’s second visit to the city, the first being his performance at the 2005 BBC Proms with The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Sir Colin Davis. Bushee is a distinguished alumnus of The Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor of Music.

Located in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, the BASIS Phoenix Orchestra Programme features 120 talented students from Grade 6 to Grade 12. Academic Excellence and Musical Mastery

BASIS Phoenix students undertake a demanding academic curriculum, with most tackling Advanced Placement Calculus by Grade 10. Despite this rigorous coursework, BASIS Phoenix Orchestra students consistently prepare, audition for, and earn places in the Arizona Music Educators Association Regional and All-State Honour Orchestras at an exceptional rate. Many orchestra students also participate in youth orchestras outside of school, showcasing their commitment to musical excellence.

Meet the Director of the Orchestra

Chuck Stewart is in his 7th year as the Director of Orchestras at BASIS Phoenix, where he teaches all orchestra classes for students from grade 6 through to grade 12. Before joining BASIS Phoenix, Stewart taught orchestra in Southern California. Beyond his school responsibilities, Stewart conducts community orchestras throughout the Phoenix valley and organizes multiple chamber music concerts each year. He holds a Master of Music in Conducting and double Bachelors in Music Education and Music Performance. Stewart marched with his high school band, Edmond Santa Fe High School in the 2006 London New Year’s Day Parade. He is extremely excited to be able to return as a teacher with his own group of student performers.

200 Carnaval del Pueblo performers from across Latin America will grace the streets of London yet again in a dancing sea of vibrant colour and music, showcasing and celebrating Latin American culture.

Since 1998, this community works to empower the Latin American community in London by exploring, celebrating & sharing the cultural heritage of 19 Latin American countries. They have demonstrated this at London Borough of Southwark’s beautiful Burgess Park Carnaval del Pueblo.

Colla Voce is the auditioned advanced ensemble at Holly Springs High School, composed of talented 11th and 12th graders. This esteemed group has built a strong tradition of excellent choral singing, consistently earning superior and gold ratings at both state and national choral festivals. They have showcased their talents at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall (2015, 2024) and the London International Choral Festival (2020). In addition to their musical achievements, these dedicated students are also actively involved in sports, student government, dance, theatre, and community service.

This marks Colla Voce’s second participation in the London International Choral Festival. Having first participated in January, they are thrilled to return and share their music once again.

About the Director:

Jenny Patchett, in her 15th year of teaching, has been a vital part of Holly Springs High School since 2011. Ms. Patchett earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and her Master of Arts in Teaching from UNC Chapel Hill. Her teaching philosophy centres on building a community of positive relationships while creating beautiful music. She believes that the relationships formed through music-making shape the identity of the ensemble, making Colla Voce not just a choir, but a close-knit family.

The Marching Wolves hail from Scottsdale, Arizona, and are a distinguished competitive marching band. Performing in parades and competitions nationwide, they captivate audiences with their dynamic shows. From July to November, they dedicate themselves to rigorous rehearsals, serving up thrilling entertainment for American football crowds.

The Desert Mountain High School Marching Wolves are set to make their sixth appearance in the London New Year’s Day Parade. Having performed across the United States including recent shows in California and Hawaii in 2023, and garnered national media attention, the Marching Wolves achieved a Top 5 finish in the prestigious Metallica Marching Band competition.

Bryan Hummel has been the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Desert Mountain High School since 2019. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Performance from Drake University in Des Moines, IA, and a Master’s degree in Performance from Arizona State University

The Society started as the Donkey Show Society in 1967. Its founder, the Honourable Robin Borwick, together with the late Reginald Sherriff Summerhays, the Society’s first President and popular author, and other enthusiastic donkey owners, set out to encourage the good breeding and improvement of the status of the Donkey. The aims they set, and which still stand today, are to encourage donkeys’ well-being and to prevent cruelty to donkeys, their protection and general welfare and to promote education on donkeys.

In 1968 the name was changed to the Donkey Breed Society as this was thought to be closer to the aims of the members. Although the title may suggest its primary interest is to ‘breeders’, or for ‘breeding’, this is not the case and the Society is open to all donkey lovers, whether or not they breed or even own donkeys.

Carole Travell has expertly led the donkey breed society at LNYDP for over 25 years and we love to have them at LNYDP!

For over 50 years, the Esperanza Flores Folklórico Dance Group, based in the greater Los Angeles area, has been captivating audiences with vibrant cultural performances. Now, the group is thrilled to mark its first performance and visit to London, England! Representing the lively traditions of Latin America and the heart and soul of Mexico, they have dazzled audiences worldwide, including a memorable performance in Hong Kong, China, for the New Year’s celebrations in 2009. In 2023, they were honored to be selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers to represent Hispanic Heritage Night and have also graced the stage for the Los Angeles Clippers organization. The group eagerly anticipates showcasing the colorful beauty and rich traditions of their culture to new audiences.

Esperanza Flores, the visionary founder of the Esperanza Flores Folklórico Dance Group, is a native of Mexico with over 60 years of dancing experience. Her lifelong passion for dance inspired her to establish the group, with the mission to celebrate and preserve the vibrant cultural traditions of Mexico. Welcome to San Luis, Arizona, the proud home of Estrella Norteño and the Gadsden Elementary School District #32! Founded in 2021, Estrella Norteño is a vibrant band made up of four exceptionally talented students from our elementary and middle schools. Specializing in the energetic and soulful genre of Regional Mexicano, the band features the accordion, bajo quinto, bass, and drums to create their distinctive sound.

Estrella Norteño has quickly risen to prominence, earning invitations to perform at local events and celebrations throughout Arizona. Their dedication and passion for music were most notably recognized when they performed at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in May 2023—an achievement that stands as a testament to their hard work and talent.

The band is led by the passionate and dedicated Miguel Angel Hernandez Duron, a former student of the Angeles de Sonora Marching Band, directed by Coordinator Martin Peralta Sr. in northern Sonora, Mexico. It was there that Mr Hernandez’s love for music truly blossomed. In 2021, he joined the Gadsden Elementary School District #32 Music Programme, bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to Estrella Norteño.

Mr Hernandez is supported by a remarkable team of educators, including Music Coordinator Mr Martin Peralta Sr., Mr Mario Hernandez, and Mr Jesus Quintero. Together, they guide and inspire Estrella Norteño, ensuring each performance is filled with passion and excellence.

FAKI – the Kimbanguist Brass Band is a London based band with origins from Congo in Africa. They are part of the Kimbanguist. Church founded by Simon Kimbangu, a peaceful activist in the colonial era.

The Kimbanguist Brass Band was formed in 1993 in the UK and is comprised of members aged 5 to 70, all of whom are united by their passion for music and their deep willing to spread joyful vibes through their unique and happy sounds! They truly love to perform as a band and have a great time in doing so.

The Foothill High School Concert Ensemble, based in Pleasanton, California, is a dynamic combined group that includes students from the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Percussion. This talented ensemble performs at various festivals throughout Northern California. This year marks a special milestone as it will be the first time in over 20 years that the ensemble and program will travel internationally.

About the Director:

Mr Erik Nishimori has been a dedicated educator at Foothill High School since 2009. Originally from Lodi, California, Mr Nishimori began his musical journey playing the trumpet. As a student at Lodi High School, he distinguished himself by performing in several prestigious groups including the California All State Honour Band, All Northern Honour Band, All Northern Jazz Honour Band, and the San Joaquin County Honour Band.

Mr Nishimori pursued his passion for music education at the University of the Pacific, where he studied under renowned instructors Eric Hammer, Ruth Brittin, and Leonard Ott. During his time at Pacific, he not only studied but also contributed to the marching band and taught trumpet privately.

With a deep-rooted love for early New Orleans Jazz, Mr Nishimori has been a member of several jazz groups that have performed along the west coast. His commitment to jazz extends to his work at the Teagarden Jazz Camp in Pollock Pines, California.

Mr Nishimori leads several ensembles at Foothill High School, including Jazz A, Jazz B, Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Concert Band. Under his direction, these groups continue to thrive and achieve musical excellence.

Mr Nishimori resides with his wife Katie and their dog Clifford Brown. Outside of his professional commitments, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, and slowly improving his golf game.

Foothill High School Marching Band & Colour Guard, hailing from Pleasanton, California, has been a proud representative of the community for 50 years since the school’s inception in 1973. The ensemble has showcased its talent both internationally and across the United States. Each October, they host their Annual Band Review, and this year, on October 26th, 2024, they will joyously celebrate their 50th anniversary.

One of the band’s most memorable moments was in 1995 when they attended the London New Year’s Day Parade. After spending New Year’s Eve in Paris, they embarked on a unique journey back to London the following morning. On the Euro Star Express train, the band played their instruments non-stop, marching off the train at Waterloo Station and straight to the parade, leading the way with their spirited performance. This remarkable feat earned them a place in the Guinness World Records for the longest distance a marching band has played.

About the Director:

Mr Fagundes brings a wealth of experience and passion to Foothill High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Music Education from California State University, Fresno, where he played an active role in the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and The Bulldog Marching Band. Under the guidance of Dr. Miles Ishigaki (clarinet) and Dr. Gary P. Gilroy (conducting), Mr Fagundes honed his skills and leadership, serving on the Board of Directors for the Wind Orchestra, as Drum Major for The Bulldog Marching Band, and as a Fraternity Education Officer for the Gamma Pi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

In 2011, Mr Fagundes performed with the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. He has also contributed his expertise as a staff member with the Sacramento Mandarins (2012) and the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets (2014-2017). His international performances at various festivals and concerts, along with his tenure as conductor for the Sociedade Filarmónica Nova Aliança of San Jose, a Portuguese community band, from 2017-2022, highlight his diverse musical journey.

Before joining Foothill High School, Mr Fagundes taught at Milpitas High School, Andrew Hill High School, and Tioga Middle School. Additionally, he has served as a marching band instructor at Leigh High School, Clovis High School, Clovis North High School, Selma High School, and Tulare Union High School.

Outside the classroom, Mr Fagundes enjoys discovering new shows, travelling, and listening to music. Most importantly, he cherishes spending quality time with his wife Kristen and their son Adrian.

The Gadsden Marching Band has earned international acclaim and is thrilled to return to London for a second time. This exciting trip marks their fourth overseas adventure. They previously participated in the London New Year’s Day Parade in January 2013, the Cabalgata De Los Reyes Parade in Madrid, Spain, in January 2016, and the Rome New Year’s Parade in January 2019.

Meet the Band Director:

Leading this exceptional group is Mr Jesus Quintero, a proud alumnus of the marching band’s inaugural year. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Mr Quintero is now entering his third year as the Gadsden Marching Band Director. His passion and dedication have helped shape the band into the powerhouse it is today.

Mr Quintero is supported by an outstanding team of educators, including District Music Coordinator Martin Peralta Sr., dance team instructor Andrea Muñoz, and music teachers Mario Hernandez, Miguel Hernandez, Abraham Acosta, Yaneli Rodriguez, Javier Peregrina, and Ana Sanchez. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the band, ensuring each performance is memorable.

Since 1912, Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, has boasted a concert band. This ensemble has graced stages at the Texas Music Educators Association convention and the Southwest Regional College Band Directors National Association conference over the years. They have toured across Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, California, Missouri, Arizona, and Oklahoma. The band is comprised of music majors and non-majors alike. Each year, they present four to five concerts.

Throughout the 2023-24 academic year, the Hardin-Simmons University Concert Band held five on-campus concerts. These included a hymn sing-along, a chapel service, an outdoor Christmas celebration for the entire campus, and two conventional concerts. Moreover, the band collaborated with McMurry University to deliver a performance featuring classic pieces from traditional British bands.

In January 2024, Jay Lester was appointed as the Director of Bands at Hardin-Simmons University. He retired in 2023 after a 28-year career as an educator and administrator in Texas public schools. His ensembles have been featured in prestigious events such as the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. In 2019-20, he held the presidency of the Texas Fine Arts Administrators. Additionally, Mr. Lester holds the position of Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Music Education at Hardin-Simmons University.

LSMOC offer a warm welcome to London and the world. They are the London and Surrey Mini Owners Club, the creators of the famous London to Brighton Mini Run which ran for 36 years. Their cars here today range from 23 years to 55 years old.

The classic Mini was an iconic symbol of London in the 60’s and everyone from The Queen, the general public and all The Beatles had them at one point. The Mini is probably the most recognisable in the world. They were made in many guises from the ex Metropolitan Police van to the fun shorty version we have here today. All lovingly cared for by their owners and some of the cars here have been owned from new!

Note: the last car in the convoy(A411 MCL) (Red Mini) was once the pride and joy of Charles Tyrill, a mechanic. When he passed away over 25yrs ago he gifted the car to his youngest grandchild and only granddaughter Chloe. She has named the car Charlie after her dear grandfather. Granddaughter Chloe is today still driving the very same car!!

We are thrilled to welcome the Miami Arts Studio Band from Miami, FL, to London’s New Year’s Day Parade. Comprised of talented students from grades 6-12, this Band Magnet Program features three Concert Bands, three Jazz Bands, and a Latin Band. The MAS Wind Symphony achieved national acclaim as the Mark of Excellence Wind Band Honors Project winner for the 2023-2024 school year. They have performed as a featured ensemble at the Music For All National Concert Festival in March 2023 and the MFA Orlando Regional in 2024. Additionally, Miami Arts Studio proudly operates its own record label, MAS Records, available on all streaming platforms.

Meet the Band Directors:

The band directors, brothers Erich S. Rivero and Steve Rivero, have dedicated their lives to music from a young age, with Steve starting trombone at 7 and Erich on trumpet at 5. This year marks Steve Rivero’s first as a director at Miami Arts Studio, though he previously marched in the LNYDP with Stoneman Douglas High School Marching Band in 2022. The Miami Arts Studio Band has also performed with Gloria Estefan on CNN’s “The Fourth in America” broadcast in 2022.

Miami Arts Studio@Zelda Glazer, part of Miami Dade County Public Schools, is an all-magnet school with nine distinct magnet programmes. The Rivero brothers bring a combined 57 years of band directing experience in Florida. Their bands have garnered numerous awards across concert, jazz, and marching band categories and have performed nationwide. Both directors have presented at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic and have been selected as Florida Music Educators Association All State Directors. Additionally, Mr Steve Rivero is a retired Chief Warrant Officer for the National Guard Band.

Founded in 1983 by the current Club President, Paul Beard, the Mini Moke Club is made up of enthusiastic Moke owners. It is Europe’s only club dedicated to the most unusual of the Mini variants – The Mini Moke and is affiliated to clubs around the world, including the Americas, Asia and the Pacific rim.

The club celebrates the Moke ‘National’ weekend and regional events, as well as organising the International Mini Moke Meeting (IMMM) and attends the International Mini Meeting (IMM) both of which take place in a different European country every year. The Club is run entirely by volunteers, open to all ages that all simply share common enthusiasm for this unique special car.

The Ocean Springs Blue-Grey Pride Marching Band consists of all student members from the four concert ensembles, supplemented by members from the Varsity Dance Team and Colour Guard. Annually, this group includes 275-300+ students, making it Mississippi’s largest high school marching band. The Blue-Grey Pride offers spirited entertainment at all home and away football games and represents the city as marching ambassadors in Ocean Springs parade events.

In Spring 2020, the Ocean Springs High School Band Programme was honoured with the Programme of Excellence award by the Mississippi Chapter of The American School Band Directors Association. The band continues to boast the highest number of students selected for the Mississippi All-State Band.

Kevin Shira is in his eighth year on staff at Ocean Springs High School and his fourth year as Director of Bands. He earned his Bachelor’s in Music Education from The University of Southern Mississippi and his Master’s of Music Education from William Carey University. In December 2019, Mr Shira received the A.E. McClain Outstanding Young Band Director Award from the Mississippi Bandmasters Association. The Wind Symphony stands as the flagship ensemble of the Ocean Springs Band Programme, boasting a distinguished history as one of the state’s premier high school concert bands. Each year, a significant number of students from the band are chosen for various clinics and honour bands across the region, with the OS Band producing the largest contingent for the Mississippi All-State Concert Band.

Throughout their brief history, the OHS Marching Band has maintained an active schedule of concert and competitive performances. Audiences across the region, and soon to be internationally, enjoy the pageantry and excitement that the Ducks offer each year. Taking advantage of the innovative Fairview Campus design, membership is extended to Cantwell’s Bridge Middle School in an effort to get as many students performing as possible after the pandemic.

The OHS Marching Band is at the heart of the Odessa HS campus. It was the first program to win a state title for the school. They are the current (2023-24) Tournament of Bands Group 2A Region IX Champions, Delaware State Marching Band Champions, and Atlantic Coast Champions and has recently been promoted into “Open Class” competition.

Brian Endlein is in his 20th year of music education. He received his B.M. in Music Education with a minor in Music History from West Chester University and is currently pursuing his Masters in Educational Leadership at Wilmington University. A 2019 Grammy Music Educator award quarter finalist and Teacher of the Year winner, he was also selected as School Band and Orchestra’s “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.” He was also a featured educator in the “The Instrumentalist” for his work on building music programs.

Odessa High School has cultivated a locally and nationally renowned band program that equips students to succeed not only in music but all areas of their life. The Odessa Symphonic band is comprised of members of our marching band and concert band to ensure the maximum amount of access to music to all our students. The Odessa Symphonic Band has received consistent “Superior” ratings at local and national festivals but always emphasizes performance over placement to the students.

As a brand new school opening in 2020, the Odessa HS band programme was founded online with 8 very eager students looking find their sound in the silence of the pandemic. In just 4 years time, the program has grown to over 60 members and now includes multiple performance groups including a jazz band, indoor guard, and indoor drumline programs.

Travis Hicks, the Director of Bands, has been leading the band since the school’s opening in 2003. An honours graduate of Ohio Northern University, Mr. Hicks holds degrees in Music Education and Music Composition. He oversees a variety of performance ensembles, including the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Winterline Programmes. Under his leadership, these groups have garnered numerous accolades at both the state and national levels.

Mr Hicks is a member of the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) and serves as a board member for the Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA). In addition to his directorial duties, he is an accomplished percussionist and drill designer. His wife, Jennifer, also serves as one of the band’s Assistant Directors. The Olentangy Liberty High School Marching Band (OLHSMB) has established a legacy of excellence, competing in almost every OMEA State Finals and earning Superior ratings nearly every year. The band was honoured to be selected as the September 11th Memorial Ceremony Ohio Statehouse Honour Band and was the only band from Ohio nominated for the 2005 National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C. Their impressive resume also includes performances at the Outback Bowl Parade, Halftime Show and Field Competition, Walt Disney World’s Spectromagic Parade, and Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade in 2002.

OLHSMB is thrilled to be making its third trip to London, having previously performed in the London New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) in 2013 and 2017, and virtually in 2021.

Nearly half of the band’s members participate in OIPA and WGI Winterline competitions, proudly holding the title of current OIPA Open Class Champions. The band takes great pride in its numerous alumni who have gone on to perform in DCI and WGI units and Collegiate Bands across the United States, with many having marched in London.

Since its inception in 2003, the Olentangy Liberty High School Band Programme has garnered numerous honours and awards, establishing itself as a pillar of musical excellence. Panash Steel Orchestra UK was formed in 1983 at Mountview High School in Harrow by David Griffiths

The school closed, but their successful and nationally renowned Steel Band continued under the leadership of Jay Butcher. They have been based in Croydon since 2008. Prior to Panash, Jay spent 12 years leading the world-famous Comets and led them to multiple competition wins and tours.

In the early years of Panash Steel Orchestra, the group toured extensively around continental Europe and appeared on the festival circuit regularly.

Panash have also participated amongst the UK’s Top Steel Orchestra’s for the pioneering online Notting Hill Carnival’s “Access All Areas” Stream.

Poles in London’s New Year’s Day Parade features Polish dancers, Polish Supplementary schools and organisations, Polish football teams and mascots, Polish Malta Cadets, Scouts (ZHP), and Polish Government ambassadors and representatives. They will perform in costumes related to important historical moments, such as the costumes of pilots participating in the Battle of Britain.

The parade will celebrate Polish culture and heritage. The theme of the parade will be Marching with Heart, Soul, and Love of Polonia. The City is home to one of the largest Polish populations in the country.

The Pride of Yukon Marching Band hails from Yukon, Oklahoma, and is an integral part of a high school band programme recognised as one of the finest in the state. The Yukon band programme excels in all facets of musical activity. The Riverview High School Kiltie Band, proudly donning the MacDonald dress tartan, has been a musical beacon in Sarasota since its formation in 1958. With 167 talented members, the band honors the legacy of Sarasota’s first settlers. Over its 65-year history, the Kiltie Band has wowed audiences in parades, concert festivals, and competitions across the United States.

In October 2023, the Kiltie Band achieved an impressive milestone, earning its 65th consecutive overall “Superior” rating at the annual Florida Bandmasters Association Marching Music Performance Assessment. This remarkable streak highlights the band’s dedication to excellence and musical prowess.

The Kilties have graced many prestigious parades, including multiple performances in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (2004, 1996, 1982, 1960) and the Tournament of Roses Parade (1987, 1980, 1969). Internationally, they have brought their spirited performances to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day in 2009 and 1989. Leading this exceptional group is Mrs. Tamara Lewis, the Director of Bands at Riverview High School in Sarasota, FL. Mrs. Lewis brings her expertise to three Concert Bands and the renowned RHS Kiltie Marching Band. She is also a respected adjudicator, clinician, and presenter in the field of instrumental music education.

Mrs. Lewis is supported by a dedicated team of Kiltie Staff Members: Ms Alison Dietz, Ms Kayla Cavanaugh, Dr Amy Earl, Mr James Dennis, Mr Nick Bruno, and Mr Josh Grant, Assistant Principal. About:

The Shenandoah Conservatory Studio Big Band, originally known as the Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, was established in the late 1950s as one of the first collegiate jazz ensembles in the United States. With a proud tradition of excellence, the band has performed with numerous jazz legends and toured extensively in China, Japan, Ireland, Iceland, Germany, Spain, France, and Senegal. They have also won acclaim at multiple major jazz festivals.

Many graduates of the band have gone on to achieve prominent careers in jazz. Notable alumni include composer/arranger Alan Baylock ’90 (B.M. in Music Education), a leading figure in jazz publishing and current director of the renowned University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band. In New York, bassist Corcoran Holt ’04 (B.M. in Jazz Studies) plays and records with a wide range of jazz greats, most notably touring with saxophone legend Kenny Garrett. Trumpeter Ashlin Parker ’05 (B.M. in Jazz Studies) has become a well-known figure on the New Orleans jazz scene, often performing and touring with NEA Jazz Master Ellis Marsalis. Jazz drummer Billy Drummond ’81 (B.M. in Jazz and Performance) has had an extensive career, touring and performing with some of the most important names in jazz since graduating from Shenandoah.

About the Band Director:

The band’s director, Dr Niess, served for 30 years as lead trombone in the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and with the U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and the U.S. Army Brass Quintet. He is currently a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Dr Niess began his teaching career in 1986 as director of bands at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, Maryland, and has since taught at George Mason, Towson, and West Chester Universities. In 2021, he became director of jazz studies and professor of trombone at Shenandoah Conservatory.

Dr Niess earned a Bachelor of Science in Instrumental Music Education from West Chester University, a Master of Music in Classical Trombone Performance from George Mason University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Classical Trombone Performance from The Catholic University of America.

The Shenandoah University Marching Band and Cheer Team hail from the charming city of Winchester, Virginia. Making their debut in the autumn of 2022, the Marching Band is now in its thrilling third season, bringing an electrifying energy to intercollegiate athletics and a variety of campus and community events.

Setting themselves apart from traditional marching bands, the Shenandoah University Marching Band features a unique twist. Instead of the usual front ensemble with xylophones and marimbas, they boast a dynamic six-piece Rock Band, supported by two talented sound engineers. This vibrant Rock Band includes two electric guitars, one electric bass, two keyboards, and a drum set, adding a modern and exhilarating edge to their performances.

About the Band Director:

At the helm of this innovative ensemble is Dr Shaun Evans, the Director of Athletic Bands at Shenandoah University. With a Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Georgia State University, Dr Evans brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the programme. His journey began as a band director at Harrison High School in Cobb County, Georgia, and has since evolved into an illustrious career guiding the next generation of musicians.

All the way from Winchester, Virginia, the Shenandoah University Rock Band serves as a component of the Shenandoah University Marching Band. As the front ensemble for the Marching Band, the Rock Band performs on the field with the Marching Band at all home football games. Additionally the group performs separately at other events in an effort to extend the ways in which the Marching Band program supports and promotes spirit, pride, and enthusiasm at intercollegiate athletics, as well as campus and community events.

The Shenandoah University Rock Band debuted as a component of the Shenandoah University Marching Band in the programmes fall 2022 inaugural season.

About the Director:

Shaun Evans, DMA, is the Director of Athletic Bands at Shenandoah University, where he guides all aspects of the athletic band program, and teaches marching band, pep band, symphonic band, and conducting. Evans holds a doctoral degree in conducting from the University of Minnesota. He received a master of music degree in conducting at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a bachelor of music degree at Georgia State University. His career began as a band director in Cobb County, Georgia, at Harrison High School.

Shenandoah University Rock Band

About:

The Band operates under Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury – a Hindu temple in London, which sits under the umbrella of Maninagar Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan, a worldwide centre for social, cultural and spiritual welfare. The Band’s main purpose is supporting the charitable endeavors of the Mandir, its parent organisation and its leader, Acharya Swamishree Maharaj, by playing at events all over the World. The Band is comprised entirely of volunteers; professionals – scientists, engineers and students. They are one of five sister Bands around the World, playing a repertoire of traditional bagpipe, as well as classic and contemporary Indian, melodies.

Fun Fact:

They are proud of their Indian roots and are proud Britons. This is reflected in all of their mixed performances of western and Indian music, but nothing captures this multiculturalism quite like their ‘Dhol fusion’, where the sounds of bagpipes fuse with the thunderous beats of Indian Dhol drums.

The Marching Captains, a high-energy, corps-style marching band, are set to bring their vibrant performances to London’s New Year’s Day Parade. Known for their dynamic presence, they perform at all Christopher Newport University home football games, as well as events throughout Hampton Roads, Virginia, and internationally. With nearly 200 members, the Marching Captains proudly stand as one of the largest NCAA Division III marching bands in the country. The ensemble is a diverse group, composed of students from a wide array of academic disciplines across the campus. This year is particularly special, marking the 20th anniversary of The Marching Captains.

Among the talented members is a remarkable student who, despite being blind, skilfully marches while playing the trumpet, exemplifying the band’s spirit of inclusivity and excellence.

Meet the Director:

At the helm of the Marching Captains is Dr. Mark P. Johnson, the Director of Athletic Bands at Christopher Newport University. He leads the Marching Captains and Pep Band, conducts the University Band, and teaches Secondary Instrumental Methods in the graduate program. Dr. Johnson’s impressive career includes serving as Director of Bands at Wilkes University and teaching music in public schools in North and South Carolina. He holds a D.M.A. from The University of Southern Mississippi and both a M.M. and B.M.E. from Winthrop University, studying under esteemed educators Dr. Catherine Rand and Dr. William Malambri.

The London Pearly Kings and Queens come from humble beginnings with the “Original Pearly King” Henry Croft (1861-1930)

Henry had a suit made totally covered in pearl buttons, and he used to wear this to collect pennies and halfpennies to help out the children in the orphanage where he had been raised. He and his suit became a great attraction, and he was approached by hospitals, churches and other organisations to collect for the poor, deaf and blind.

To this day there are many pearly kings and queens organisations with one aim of keeping the traditions alive and that is charity.

The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society are a national treasure here in London and a crowd favourite here at LNYDP!

The Normal Marching Band, hailing from Normal, Illinois, just south of Chicago, is a brilliant ensemble comprised of students from Normal Community and Normal West High Schools. Established in 2018, this band continues the rich traditions of excellence from the original ensembles of both schools. In a short span, the Normal Marching Band has garnered numerous awards for outstanding musical and visual performances, as well as overall performance effectiveness across every section of the band. Notably, they have been crowned Class 6A Illinois State Marching Band Champions for the past two seasons. The Normal Marching Band is eagerly anticipating representing their schools and community at the 2025 London New Year’s Day Parade and is truly honoured by the opportunity.

The Normal Wind Ensemble

Since its inception in 1923, the renowned Cowboy Band from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, has delighted audiences. Adorned in classic western gear, including blue jeans, cowboy boots, Stetson hats, western shirts, and chaps, they perform a repertoire that spans traditional western tunes and contemporary crowd-pleasers. The Cowboy Band has graced performances for six U.S. Presidents, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, among numerous other events.

The band has showcased their talents in 17 countries across North America, Europe, and Asia. Their centennial celebration in 2023 was marked by a reunion of over 300 former members. In 2024, they participated in the Battle of Flowers Parade in San Antonio, Texas.

Jay Lester, who became the ninth director of the Cowboy Band in January 2024, brings 28 years of experience as an educator and administrator in Texas public schools, retiring in 2023. His ensembles have been featured at the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, and the Texas Music Educators Association convention. In 2019-20, he presided over the Texas Fine Arts Administrators. Additionally, Mr. Lester holds the position of Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Music Education at Hardin-Simmons University.

The Western Kentucky University Big Red Marching Band is the largest and most visible performing ensemble on campus with over 270 students representing 60+ majors. The BRMB performs for all Hilltopper football games, at campus and community events, as well as exhibition events in local, regional, and national area marching contests. Membership in the Big Red Marching Band is open to any student at WKU who has participated in a marching band regardless of academic major. You need to meet Big Red – The Spirit of WKU! Big Red, Western Kentucky University’s athletic mascot, was born in the fall of 1979 and celebrates its birthday on December 1st. The huge, furry, lovable creature was originally designed and built by WKU student Ralph Carey of Cincinnati, and made its’ debut during the Hilltoppers’ 1979-80 basketball season. Big Red has become a big hit with fans of all ages throughout the state and the nation. Big Red’s signature moves are the belly slide and belly shake. Big Red LOVES the BRMB and we love Big Red!

Dr. Matthew McCurry serves as the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Western Kentucky University where teaches courses in music education, conducts the Spring Symphonic Band and oversees the athletic band program, including the Big Red Marching Band – The Pride of the Hilltoppers. Under his direction, the WKU Athletic Bands continue to make appearances on the national, and soon, international stage. Dr. McCurry is the founding director of the Hilltopper Summer Music Camp and makes regular appearances as a guest clinician for local and regional honor bands and summer clinics. Dr Schallert, the principal conductor, also leads the WKU Wind Ensemble, which has performed at prestigious events such as the 2016 College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference and the Kentucky Music Educators Conferences in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2025. WKU bands have proudly represented the university in Costa Rica, Russia, Italy, France, and Spain.
