Parade Beats Weather and Wows the World
Lewisham, Sutton and Greenwich were the big borough winners at London’s New Year’s Day Parade, but London charities are the real beneficiaries.
Thousands of performers from around the World, defied the challenging weather conditions, to put on a show that wowed the World.
The results of the coveted London Borough Competition, announced on Saturday (January 4th) at a ceremony in the heart of Westminster, were eagerly awaited by mayors and supporters from across the Capital.
Executive Director Joe Bone poured praise on all that gathered saying:
“You were magnificent- and we salute you. Your energy, passion and sheer determination, to entertain the World, despite the weather conditions, epitomised the spirit of this great city.
“You are a credit to London and your country.
“Thank you for making it the best parade in our 39-year history.”
Lewisham topped the table earning their charity £15,000.
Their entry, A Brighter Tomorrow, which was powered by youth and innovation, celebrated one of the most inclusive and multi-cultural places in the Capital, and therefore the World. Residents from all walks of life participated in their celebratory section.
Sutton came second, earning their mayoral charity £10,000.
Their entry, ‘Push the Boat Out’’, which was so appropriate for the conditions, featured several sections, showcasing reality and fantasy, including a boat and a yellow submarine, along with some of the creatures that lurk in the waters beneath.
Greenwich came 3rd, earning their mayoral charity £5,000.
Leading this year’s Royal Greenwich procession will be the Mayor and Mayoress of Royal Greenwich, Cllr Jit Ranabhat and Mrs. Gaumaya Gurung Ranabhat.
The procession will showcase the cultural diversity and talent that make this borough truly unique, featuring a series of beautifully crafted hand-pulled carts. Each cart will reflect the vibrant mix of traditions, history, and artistry that Greenwich is known for.
All other borough entries were awarded £2,000 donations. They were Harrow, Redbridge, Hounslow, Camden, The City of Westminster, Haringey, Enfield Barnet, Lambeth and Havering.
Since its inception the London Borough Competition has raised more than £2.5m for charities
The parade, a much-cherished turn of year tradition, attracted hundreds of thousands of people to the West End of London.
